Benefits

  • Allows progressive overload of the abs, unlike bodyweight crunches
  • Builds visible ab thickness

Step by step

  1. 1Kneel below a high cable pulley holding a rope attachment at your head.
  2. 2Keeping your hips still, crunch your torso down toward your knees.
  3. 3Squeeze your abs hard at the bottom of the movement.
  4. 4Slowly return to the starting position.

Breathing guide

Exhale as you crunch down, inhale as you return.

Common mistakes

  • Using the hips or arms to pull down instead of the abs
  • Rounding only the upper back, not the whole spine

Safety tips

  • Keep your hips fixed in place throughout.
  • Think about curling your ribcage toward your pelvis.

Variations

  • Standing cable crunch
